4000 Bolts Of Lightning Hit Australia Today
It is getting really close to bush fire season here where we live in Australia. This time of the year absolutely terriffies me, considering where we live - the fact that the house is on top of a cliff edge and has lots of trees around makes it a really bad place to be if a fire came through.
Sometimes it's the incredible dryness of the Australian bush and the intense summer heat that causes the fires and a lot of the time it can be lightning stikes. Previous summers there have been some really big bush fires close by. It is something that I am looking forward to not having to worry about once we have moved back to the city!
This morning it was pouring with rain - something we haven't seen in quite sometime, even though we have just had our winter. They said on the news the other day that 96% of New South Wales is now in drought compared to 42% only 6 months ago.
Jade asked if she could wear long pants to school this morning because she was freezing, but after a few minutes thought, she decided to wear her school shorts. After all the rain we had this morning and how cold it was, the rest of today was quite hot and very humid - Jade asked if she could swim in the pool when she got home from school!
Thunderstorms sparked 4,000 bolts of lightning across south eastern Australia today, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. Senior forecaster Neale Fraser said the lightning strikes in the south east corner of New South Wales heralded the start of Australia's summer storm season.
"From now on, right through the summer, is the severe storm season. Certainly from October onwards until March or April next year is potentially severe thunderstorm time," he said. Fire fighting officials are warning of a severe bushfire season due to a severe drought and unseasonally high temperatures.
Great... there's something to look forward to.
